God's Children are Not for Sale
I recently had the opportunity to watch “Sound of Freedom,” a powerful and thought-provoking film that sheds light on one of the darkest aspects of our society - child trafficking. Directed by Alejandro Monteverde, this film brings to life the incredible true story of Tim Ballard, a former government agent who dedicated his life to rescuing children from the clutches of human traffickers.
I typically like to “stay in my lane” of ministry, but this message is too important to ignore. It’s also based in Latin America and follows the trafficking of a brother and sister from Honduras (my Ancestral land) to Colombia. Allow me to begin with the end first: Sound of Freedom devotes a few minutes at the end of the movie, past the credits, to a message from its star. He challenges viewers to consider how they might do their part to end child trafficking. I’m unsure what that looks like for me, but I want to start with this review.
Plot and Themes:
With its exceptional storytelling, outstanding performances, and impactful message, “Sound of Freedom” is a must-watch for anyone who wants to understand the scourge of child trafficking and its impact on children throughout the world.
The movie follows the journey of Tim Ballard (played by Jim Caviezel), a former CIA operative who creates a special task force to combat child trafficking. The film takes us on a rollercoaster ride as Tim and his team embark on dangerous missions, infiltrating criminal networks to save innocent lives. The movie explores themes of courage, sacrifice, compassion, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable evil.
But what stood out for me is how Tim and his wife, played by the always luminous Mira Sorvino, witnessed their Christian faith. In an interview with Tim, he discussed the moment he and his wife decided he needed to pursue this work. He worked for Homeland Security and supported his wife and their six children on that salary. When it was clear the US Government would not support his efforts, he called his wife to let her know his choices were to either abandon the project and therefore the children or quit and pursue the work. His wife said, “I will not let you jeopardize my salvation by not doing this.”
Performances and Direction:
Jim Caviezel delivers a powerful performance as Tim Ballard, embodying the character’s determination, empathy, and unwavering commitment to his mission. His portrayal effectively conveys the emotional toll and personal sacrifices that come with fighting against such a heinous crime. Mira Sorvino shines beautifully as Tim’s wife, Katherine Ballard, and provides a strong and supportive presence throughout the movie. Additionally, the supporting cast, including Eduardo Verástegui and Bill Camp, deliver commendable performances that elevate the film’s authenticity.
Alejandro Monteverde’s direction is commendable, as he skillfully balances the intensity of the action sequences with the emotional depth of the characters. Monteverde’s ability to create a sense of urgency and suspense while highlighting the humanity at the core of each rescue operation is genuinely praiseworthy. The film’s pacing keeps the audience engaged, and the attention to detail in recreating various locations adds to its realism.
Impact and Message:
“Sound of Freedom” not only entertains but also educates and raises awareness about the global issue of child trafficking. By shining a light on this dark corner of society, the film compels viewers to reflect on the reality that millions of children face every day. It serves as a call to action, urging individuals, communities, and governments to come together to combat this grave violation of human rights.
Conclusion:
“Sound of Freedom” is an emotionally charged and inspiring film that sheds light on the tragic reality of human trafficking. With its compelling performances, engaging storytelling, and powerful message, the movie leaves a lasting impact on its viewers. It serves as a reminder that every individual has the power to make a difference and that no child should be deprived of their freedom. I highly recommend “Sound of Freedom” to everyone, as it not only entertains but also motivates us to be agents of change in our society.
